L’Enclume is a Michelin star restaurant and home of the chef, proprietor Simon Rogan. The restaurant has been voted one of the five best destination restaurants with rooms in Europe. Rogan is very much his own man and has been ploughing an individual and idiosyncratic furrow at his Cumbrian restaurant-with-rooms L’Enclume for 12 years. John Coward Architects Ltd were responsible for the project.
L’Enclume was formerly a small antique shop but originally the village blacksmiths. The building is Grade II Listed and located centrally in the Cartmel Conservation Area overlooked by the Priory Church of St Mary and St Michael. All the many historic features of the building have been retained in the conversion and the restaurant accommodation looks out into the sheltered private walled garden fronting onto the River Eea.
JCA Ltd have also worked with Simon and the building owner to create Rogan & Co which is a Bistro in the village with nearby lettable holiday accommodation at L’Enclume House. This Grade II Listed Building also in the Conservation Area has been converted to a high standard to create a modern interior in a historic building.
This might all sound terribly precious but L’Enclume is in fact enormously relaxed – there aren’t many two Michelin-starred restaurants where you would feel overdressed wearing a suit. The dining room has rough stone walls (L’Enclume means “anvil” and the building used to be the village smithy), there are no tablecloths on the elegant wooden tables and a modern conservatory gives on to a small garden with a rushing beck beyond.
What’s more, young staff chat passionately and knowledgeably about what you’re about to eat without any of the turgid exposition that often accompanies this level of cooking.
