DON’T underestimate the importance of natural light

Obstacles to natural light should therefore be eliminated as much as possible. Secondary glazing for example, absorbs light and so, should be gotten rid of. Furthermore, objects on window sills obstruct light and are a hindrance to a natural light accommodating home. Muslin drapes or blinds should be used instead of heavy curtains too.

DO – be versatile

When lighting a room with electric lights, you should never just settle for a bog standard bulb hanging in the middle of the room. Versatility is king and key when creating an atmospheric interior. Try a bit of creativity when installing a room’s lighting.

Several lights usually have a stronger affect than one, and these lights should be placed to perfection – like a work of art – in order to create the right mood for a room.

You must vary the types of electronic lighting – which should all be controlled separately – in a room to get the most out of it.

DON’T ignore the floor

While lighting is of course predominantly a ceiling feature, the light of a room will be affected by your choice of flooring.

For example, if you want natural light to reflect throughout the room – and you should – then go for flooring with a high-gloss finish, rather than soft carpets which absorb and hold natural light.

DO listen to experts but you DON’T have to agree with everything they say

When adding in lighting to a property, many people make the mistake of thinking they know best and completely ignore the advice of experts who base their craft around such matters. On the flip side, many do the opposite and take everything an expert will say as fact, when often the matters to do with lighting are more based on opinion.

For matters pertaining to health, safety and basic design, you should seek out the help and assistance of specialist companies such as Lampcommerce, to name but a few.

For matters concerning particular designs and creative ideas, you should listen to expert advice, however also have a degree of autonomy and make your own decisions based on how you want your home to look and feel.
